New Delhi, October 14, 2023 — The Danish Siddiqui Foundation is proud to announce its partnership with The Azadi Project, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization, for the upcoming two-day global event, “Rethinking Migration: Azadi to Co-exist.” The event will take place at Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi, on the 3rd and 4th of November, 2023.
The two-day event is dedicated to addressing the critical concerns surrounding forced migration globally, with a particular focus on South Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Forced migration disrupts lives, separates families, and exposes people to immense risks, especially women and children. The event’s primary goal is to raise awareness, advocate for the rights of forcibly displaced individuals, and foster the creation of safe and inclusive environments where people can rebuild their lives with dignity and security.
A poignant highlight of the event is a photo exhibition paying tribute to the late two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, Danish Siddiqui. The exhibition will showcase his impactful works documenting forced migrations and displacements. Additionally, the exhibition will feature the works of leading photojournalists and migrant photographers globally, shedding light on the effects of migration and displacement due to climate change and conflicts.
An integral part of the event is the screening of the film “Mama: Norway’s Afghan Sons,” directed by the award-winning journalist Preethi Nallu and produced by the Thomson Foundation. The film shares the stories and asylum experiences of six Afghan asylum seekers through the voice of retired Norwegian teacher Gro Dregelid, who has welcomed 60 such boys since 2009.
Prof. Siddiqui, Director of the Danish Siddiqui Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “Forced migration and displacement represent critical global challenges. Co-partners for this event include the Asia Society India Center, Mariwala Health Initiative, Report For the World, and Fortify Rights, uniting their efforts to address the multifaceted challenges posed by forced migration.
